Sea of Thieves Season 12 brings new guns, new tools and more

What a voyage it has been for Sea of Thieves hey? From a disappointing launch, Rare hunkered down and released update after update, transforming the game from an empty ocean to a now bustling sea port. Now, with 40 million players in it’s cargo hold, Sea of Thieves is setting sail for Season 12.

Arriving on April 30th to coincide with the full PlayStation 5 release of the game, Rare are bringing a whole host of new features, tools and gear for all pirates to get to grips with.

On the weapons front, we have a new double-barrelled pistol, capable of either two shots before reloading, or a charged shot to deal higher damage to your enemies. Sea of Thieves is also introducing Throwing Knives – not only can you stab with them for a small amount of damage, but you can chuck them at foes. In true Sea of Thieves style, even if you miss, you can pick up the knives from wherever they fall.

For the cannons on your ship, we have the new scattershot, which breaks apart into 4 separate shots, creating more holes in the hull for enemy crews to repair. It’s got a much shorter range than a standard cannon ball, and I’m very curious as to how effective it is against crew. There’s a new throwable, in the form of a skeleton-summoning “Bone Crawler”, which summons some skeleton friends to fight on your side. It can even be shot from your ship cannons, providing some welcome distraction against enemy crews.

There are new traversal options too, with pirates being able to get around on ziplines, and even balance on harpoon ropes to get around. Most interestingly, there’s also the “Horn of Fair Winds”, found in mermaid realms.

While limited in charge, it basically provides wind on command and has a surprising number of uses, from slowing a pirate down when jumping from a great height, blowing enemy crew from your ship, putting out fires and most importantly, blowing wind into your sails. You can even use it to make a ponderingly slow rowboat way more agile. Nifty!

Are you going to be jumping in for some pirate action when Season 12 for Sea of Thieves launches on April 30th? I know I am.
