Xbox recently held their 2nd annual “Developer_Direct”, a showcase where several teams from Xbox’s growing selection of first party studios bring viewers into their studios to showcase games they are working on. While there were only 5 games showcased during the event yesterday, it is possible a 6th game may have been teased in plain sight.
Eagle Eyed forum goers noticed what may be the first public acknowledgment of Bethesda working on a new Quake game. During the recent Developer_Direct, “Ake 6” with the Quake logo below, appears briefly on a shot of a whiteboard.
Unless this was a complete mistake or a coincidence, it seems incredibly likely that Machine Games intended to tease Quake in some way. A new Quake being in the works shouldn’t be a complete shock, as rumors of id Software working on a new game have been floating around for while, and some signs have pointed to the game being Quake. Our very own “Shpeshal Nick” shared on a podcast back in 2021 that he’d heard a new Quake is in the works from id and was being co developed by Machine Games.
Id Software most recently worked on the Doom franchise with the first entry in their rebooted series, “Doom”, releasing in 2016. In 2020, the studio released “Doom Eternal”. Quake is a classic FPS franchise from the 90s and if a new game in the series is indeed in the works, it could follow a similar route as the rebooted Doom series where it modernizes gameplay mechanics while staying true to the classic feel of the series.
A new Quake release would add to Xbox’s already loaded roster of FPS franchises and would join series such as Call of Duty, Halo, Overwatch, Doom and more.
Are MachineGames and Bethesda toying with their audience? Will it amount to something in the future? Who knows, but with it only being January, Microsoft and Xbox have plenty of opportunities ahead to reveal even more games. The next Quake could be one of them.
