Sea of Thieves Is Out On PS5 Today

It's time to sail the high seas for everyone!

Although we knew it was coming to the PS5 a few weeks ago, today is finally the day where the popular Xbox game, Sea of Thieves, officially releases on the Playstation 5. This game was among 3 others that were announced to be releasing on competitor consoles, Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, and Grounded. It was also the last of the four to release, though there still persist rumours and evidence that a Switch release for Hi-Fi Rush might not be far away.

Sea of Thieves originally released on the Xbox One in May, 2018 and while it was fun, it was lacking in content variety leading to a poor critic score. It has now been 6 years, however, and Rare has been updating and releasing content for the game the entire time, leading to a a release that has plenty to do right away for Playstation players. While reviews for the Playstation release are sparse right now, it currently has a Metacritic score of 85 based on 4 critic reviews.

Early Access for the PS5 release of Sea of Thieves has been available for a few days now, but now everyone can sail the high seas by purchasing the base game for 39.99 USD. Also releasing today on both the PS5 and Xbox is Season 12 of the game, which brings new guns (such as a double barreled pistol and throwing knives), new tools (such as ziplines) and a whole lot more. Read all about that update here!

We reviewed Sea of Thieves in 2020, two years after it’s release, and had this to say about it.

If there’s one take away I have from my time with Sea of Thieves over the last two years, is that it’s been such a pleasure to see it evolve. I’ve been there for some amazing moments, from first uniting with another crew to take on a legendary megalodon, to battling relentless foes on a quest to keep every piece of treasure I could find. I’ve experienced the triumph of victory, the bitterness of losing everything as my ships sinks beneath the waves. I’ve enjoyed the quieter moments with friends just talking about life. I’ve undertaken amazing quests, solved unique and often mind-bending riddles, and have enjoyed bonds of fellowship and camaraderie. I’ve been burnt out and not played for extended periods, but there was no fear of missing out. My ship and my crew were always there, ready to pick up where we left off.

Sea of Thieves isn’t for everyone. After all, neither was the life of a Pirate. But if you have the time, the friends and the heart to take it on, it can reward you not just with treasure and glory, but with memories that will stay with you, long after your Pirate Legend has faded into myth.

But 2020 is now four years ago and the game has changed and evolved a fair bit. Keep an eye out on our site and channel for possibly another, more recent, look at the game…

Like many, I started my Xbox journey with Halo CE and I've been a pretty big fan ever since. I don't know too much about the technical mumbo jumbo but I know that the future of Xbox looks bright and I'm happy to be along for the ride.
