Today, review score aggregator Metacritic dropped their yearly Game Publisher Rankings article, not only marking 15 years of roundups but also encapsulating just how crazy-good of a year 2024 was in video games (though let’s not forget the blood toll it took to get there). SEGA finds itself sitting at #1 on the rankings list, with an average Metascore of 82.9% particularly thanks to three titles (‘Metaphor’, ‘Infinite Wealth, ‘SMT V:Vengeance’). The company last received this honour back in 2021 and 2016, making them no stranger to the front row of this list.
CAPCOM finds itself square in 2nd place (2nd is the best) and the third with the hairy chest is Aksys games. The former sits at an average Metascore of 82.1 (none of their games marked higher than 90% this year) while the latter sits with a 78.8 average and earned this right thanks to the positive marks all five of its titles received from critics.
Sony Interactive Entertainment finds itself at 4th place, Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios huddles up to 9th, and Nintendo finds itself at 22nd place (might need to up your RPG “game”, Nintendo). Plenty of indie publishers found their way into this list as well with companies like ININ Games, Gamera Games, Raw Fury, and even IDEA FACTORY making the top 20.
