PUBG Roadmap Includes Destructible Environments and a Move to Unreal Engine 5

PUBG’s new roadmap has revealed that the game will include destructible environments and a move to Unreal Engine 5.

The announcement was made in a brand-new 24-minute video on YouTube, in which the developers revealed the future of the popular free-to-play Battle Royale. You can watch the full presentation below:

Destructible environments, which will come to the game in April 2024 were a huge talking point of the roadmap and will “add a dynamic new layer of strategy and tactics to the game”, they said.

On the official blog, they said:

Introducing Various In-Game Interaction Features

  • By providing players the ability to strategically destroy sections of buildings, we unlock the possibility for them to carve out new attack routes or construct defensive barriers. This feature hopes to go beyond mere environmental destruction, infusing the game with an enriched layer of strategy and tactics.
  • Such ‘destruction’ elements are expected to add dynamism to the game and create unpredictable situations, necessitating players to change their strategies flexibly according to circumstances.
  • Discussions on the ‘environmental destruction’ feature are currently ongoing, and we plan to introduce some of these features in the upcoming April update, with continuous improvements and expansions to follow.

Also included in the announcement was the most to Unreal Engine 5, which is yet to have an official release date. Moving forward, the game will also see bi-monthly updates to the game’s weapons in an effort to “foster a stable ecosystem and provide a greater diversity of choices to players”.

PUBG is one of the most popular Battle Royale games of all time, first launching on Steam in March 2017. In January 2018, the game amassed 3,257,248 players, making it Steam’s all-time peak concurrent figure for a single game – a number still not beaten six years later. Although the game is seven years old, it still garners an average of over half a million concurrent players per day.
