A report from Bloomberg today in relation to the RAMpocalypse has cast doubt on a new PlayStation console hitting before 2028 at the earliest. Per the story, “Sony Group Corp. is now considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console to 2028 or even 2029, according to people familiar with the company’s thinking.” The PS5 debuted in 2020, seven years after the PS4, which itself was 8 years after the PS3.

This generation has been a success for Sony, with the PS5 maintaining hardware shipment count parity with the PS4 generation despite being far more expensive. RAM and SSD prices have begun to rise as AI data centers, led by OpenAI have been buying up all the orders for 2026’s output by the handful of NAND flash manufacturers on the market.

Public-focused brands like Crucial have been shuttered in favor of their direct-to-business equivalents getting all of the available stock. Early 2025 was one of the best times for building a PC in recent memory. Now, if you bought a 32 GB RAM kit the price tripled for most RAM, with SSD prices starting to follow.

Xbox seems to be full-steam ahead with their plans for a Console-PC Hybrid next generation. Reports have surfaced from hit or miss sources like Moore’s Law is Dead that their codename Magnus chip is fully ‘taped out’ and ready for 2027. It is believed that Xbox’s ‘best case scenario’ is a 2027 launch, if their updated take on the Windows operating system focused on gaming is ready.

  1. Ok, at least this link from the article seems to be working.

As for this report, I guess the rumors going around have some credibility.
