GOG Acquired From CD PROJEKT by Original CoFounder

Well, this came out of nowhere. DRM-free videogame marketplace GOG has been acquired from CD PROJEKT – by it’s original co-founder, Michał Kiciński.

In a surprise blog post featured on the GOG website, the GOG Team advised what’s happening, and that Michał Kiciński – himself one of the original co-founders of CD PROJEKT is acquiring GOG from the company.

We believe the games that shaped us deserve to stay alive: easy to find, buy, download, and play forever. But time is annoyingly good at erasing them. Rights get tangled, compatibility breaks, builds disappear, and a nostalgic evening often turns into a troubleshooting session. That’s the difference between “I’m playing today” (the game lives on) and “I’ll play someday” (the game dies).

As Michał put it: “GOG stands for freedom, independence, and genuine control.

According to the GOG Team, this new chapter is all about doubling down on the original vision. “We want to do more to preserve the classics of the past, celebrate standout games of today, and help shape the classics of tomorrow, including new games with real retro spirit.

In terms of what that might mean for you as a customer, the team have advised that being DRM free is going to be more ‘central’ to GOG than ever before. Libraries will remain intact, with the ‘same access, same offline installers and same sense of ownership.

CD PROJEKT will maintain it’s relationship with GOG, with their games continuing to be available – including any upcoming titles – like Witcher 4 – releasing there as per usual.

They’ve published an FAQ if you’re intrigued and want to learn more. Just head here for all the details.
