The Outer Worlds 2, which has an earl-access release on this Friday, just got a Dynamic Background on Xbox Series consoles. Reviews for the title will hit on Thursday, October 23rd at 9 AM EDT US. Our review, done by yours truly, is ready to go with footage from Xbox Series X, PC, and the Xbox Ally X. Here is a video of the Dynamic Background in action:

Preview Time

I reviewed the game back during Gamescom, stating:

Continuing the bigger and better mantra of recent Obsidian titles, the gameplay and graphics are superb. Playing on a Series X with Variable Refresh Rate on and setting things to Balanced, I had a smoother experience that looked close to PC on medium to high settings. It was a crisp, clean image with no slowdown. On my beefy rig, I turned everything to ultra 4k with quality FSR3, ray-tracing, and it was damned good looking.  HDR is a bit buggy on PC in this build, though it worked flawlessly on console.

Gameplay-wise, if you’ve played Avowed, then you know the improvements Obsidian has made to their movement. Combat itself, shooting and melee, is a bit different. Instead of the heavy, weighty melee focus of Avowed, you have a fast-paced shooter with decent melee when you use it.  The two guns in the demo felt good on controller and great on mouse and keyboard. There are a lot of options for aim assist, turn speeds, and more, which should help controller players dial in their preferred settings.

I played through in both first and third person modes, and while I appreciate the latter’s inclusion, I found first person to be preferable. It feels better in both movement and aiming, as well as world interactions. It’s an early preview build, but I had a lot of trouble using items and looting in third person. Sliding around cover and stealthily taking out enemies was decently easy on normal difficulty. There were also Easy (aka Nick mode), Hard, and Harder to round things out.
