Xbox Users Play More Than Other Platforms

UK based data company Ampere Analytics recently published an article noting that on average Xbox users play more games than those playing on both Playstation and Steam. The average number of games played per month by Xbox gamers was 5.7, compared to Steam users playing 4.5 and Playstation coming in at 3.7. So why do Xbox users play more than other platforms?

Game Pass Hits the Spot…

According to Louise Woolridge at Ampere Analytics, the higher consumption is at least in part down to Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. She had this to say about it: ” Game Pass is a strong driver behind the high game consumption of Xbox users. As of August 2025, there are more than 500 unique titles available to console users of Game Pass. Although this is considerably fewer than PlayStation Plus Premium, which offers just under 1,000 games, Game Pass subscribers are far more active across the available titles. On average, PlayStation users play two fewer games each month compared to Xbox users – and this has been the case since Ampere tracking began in August 2022.” Woolridge also noted that although the average cost price of titles is lower on Steam than consoles, the value for money that Game Pass provides motivates players to engage with a wider variety of game releases.

Are we more fickle?

It was also mentioned in the article that on average, Xbox players spend less time on each game that they play, although this varies monthly. According to Ampere Analytics, one of the main reasons for this change is due to Call of Duty, with users spending much more time in one game during release months. The figure gradually lessens in the months following the release – so the company predicts that players will be spending more time playing when Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 releases in the next couple of months.

The figures also show that on average 42% of total game time by Xbox players was on Game Pass games. This figure rises to approximately 50% during a Call of Duty release – so gamers are spending just under half of all their time on Xbox playing Game Pass titles.

Of course, these figures are just for the month of August, wider trends and patterns take longer to establish – but it’s safe to say that Xbox Game Pass is definitely a successful model for encouraging users to play a wider variety of games.
