If you were looking forward to the reboot of Perfect Dark, and were likely dismayed by its cancellation, you can mourn what might have been once more thanks to new Perfect Dark concept art that has emerged online.

The reboot of Perfect Dark was cancelled earlier this year after the closure of The Initiative studio due to restructuring at Xbox. An initial reveal in 2018 of the game at E3, followed up by a gameplay trailer in 2024 was as close as fans were going to get to the reboot of Rare’s N64 classic title. But an article from MP1st has managed to source both Concept art and Gameplay details which were leaked after the cancellation.
The internal documentation shared with MP1st contains core concepts, screenshots of concept art and also goes into detail of various gameplay systems; including an in-depth look at one of them: The Adrenaline System. This system used adrenaline as a resource, meaning that the protagonist Joanna Dark would have some commanding abilities such as slowing down time to dodge bullets and taking-out enemies one after the other at speed.
The leaked documentation also reveals that the team at The Initiative were also working on a Vertical Slice of the game right up until as recently as April 2025. This was also titled ‘Season 1’, perhaps indicating that the original idea was to release the reboot as episodes and not as one title.
Concept Art

The images sourced by MP1st contain location concept art from the intended release. The aesthetic was described as ‘Eco Sci-Fi’, combining futuristic looking architecture with more nature-inspired backdrops. According to the article “The creative vision was to reimagine the franchise while retaining the core DNA from the original Nintendo 64 title. The primary inspiration for this approach was the HBO series Westworld, which successfully reimagined a classic property for a modern audience while exploring fresh themes and concepts.” You can check out the full article – including additional images – over at MP1st.
After looking at the amount of work and detail already gone into the reboot, it seems a massive shame that the project has been shelved. Are you disappointed by the cancellation of Perfect Dark?
