Per a new report from the folks over at VGC, Rare’s next game, ‘Everwild’ has been cancelled. This news comes shortly after reports of over 9000+ layoffs across Microsoft, with multiple Xbox Game Studios affected.

Everwild was first announced back at X019 in London, and got a follow up trailer in 2020. Little was seen of the game since, with reports that it had been entirely rebooted in 2021, which saw Gregg Mayles take on the role of Creative Director.
During Phil Spencer’s appearance on the XboxEra podcast earlier this year, he provided an update on the game. When asked what he was most looking forward to when it came to in-development titles, he referenced State of Decay 3 and Double Fine, before saying “I’ll say because I was recently out at Rare. It’s nice to see the team with Everwild and the progress that they’re making. We’ve been able to give those teams time in what they’re doing which is good and still have a portfolio like we have. It’s like a dream that Matt (Booty) and I have had for a long time, so it’s finally good to be there. We can give those teams time”
It seems for Rare, that time has now run out. Per the report from VGC, “According to people with knowledge of the project, team members were informed of the news“. We’ve reached out to Microsoft for comment.
