Mortal Shell 2 Revealed, Coming Next Year

Another Shell to Find

In a surprise announcement at Summer Game Fest 2025, a sequel to the cult hit Mortal Shell was announced, aptly titled: Mortal Shell 2. The first game was another “soulslike” amongst many, but it found its own niche with a few unique mechanics, such as utilizing a “shell” that you inhabit in order to change your playstyle.

Mortal Shell 2 Announced for Xbox

Moral Shell 2 was revealed with a bombastic trailer, full of heavy metal music and violence that underscored a game that seems to be much more ambitious than the first one. It’s been 5 years since the release of Mortal Shell, and if the game sounds familiar it’s because it was added into gamepass in 2023. While we didn’t review the game, we did write an impressions piece, where we wrote:

“Overall my first hours with Mortal Shell have been enjoyable. If you are someone who likes the Souls games you will likely enjoy this game. If you are someone who has been interested in this genre but don’t want to invest the time, this game is a much easier sell. I haven’t beaten the game but I have heard it runs roughly 15 or so hourss, meaning you can likely beat it in a few play sessions. The game is 29.99, so the monetary investment is less as well. Give the game a try if you want a condensed, yet well made, game in the Souls genre.”

Mortal Shell 2

Mortal Shell 2 is being published by Playstack and developed by Cold Symmetry, and registration for an open beta is open now, though the game aims to release in 2025. The developers provided some more information on the game with their press release as well:

Mortal Shell II is a dark power fantasy. This standalone sequel action-RPG offers an immersive, interconnected open world, expansive yet deliberately compact, designed to unfold its twisted landscapes and hidden structures while respecting the player’s time.

In this single-player title, your journey will be marked by brutal, high-intensity combat, both melee and ranged, against relentless enemies that demand your full attention and mastery.

You won’t need to have played the first Mortal Shell to dive into the sequel. However, returning players will find echoes of familiar faces, some changed, some forgotten, alongside entirely new Shells to discover and inhabit.

Like many, I started my Xbox journey with Halo CE and I've been a pretty big fan ever since. I don't know too much about the technical mumbo jumbo but I know that the future of Xbox looks bright and I'm happy to be along for the ride.
