Racing games have always been the easy go-to comparison between Xbox and PlayStation in the never ending console wars. Which console had the bigger and better racing franchise was an important fight to determine which brand was “winning”. Forza and the arcade offshoot Forza Horizon represented Xbox while Gran Turismo has long represented PlayStation.
Now that Forza Horizon has gone over to PlayStation and is dominating that platform the same way it has dominated Xbox for years, the debate about which series is truly the biggest will be an interesting one to see unfold over the coming years.
While it’s too early to say just how well Forza Horizon will end up doing on PlayStation, we may know just how dominant the series has been overall thanks to recent comments by Playground games co founder Gavin Raeburn. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz discussing his new studio he founded after leaving Playground, he comments that Horizon has actually made more revenue than games like Gran Turismo and others combined.
“If you look at the revenue earning of [Horizon], it beats Gran Turismo, F1, Need For Speed and The Crew put together. That’s before Horizon went over to PlayStation. That’s massive. I think what that’s done to the market, though, [is] all the other racing developers are now copying a lot of that Horizon formula.”
It seems pretty clear from the franchises popularity as well as these comments by Raeburn that Forza Horizon is currently the king of the racing genre, and its recent move to PlayStation means it will enjoy even more success and may see domination across multiple platforms that few games enjoy.
Forza Horizon 6 is next, but Horizon 5 is still doing so well still we won’t be surprised if Playground games takes their time to make sure that the game is as great as possible before deciding to release it.
