id Software has put up the latest patch notes for DOOM: The Dark Ages, and the Super Shotgun is getting a nerf.

In an ever updating blog post a new series of balance changes have been detailed for DOOM: TDA:
Update from 5/29/25
- Adjustments to player forgiveness systems to decrease the frequency of “from behind” attacks resulting in death on the highest damage sliders (250% – 500%)
- Reduced effectiveness of the Super Shotgun against the Hell Knight and certain enemy armors
- Increased the ammo count for both Plasma class weapons
- Increased the amount of ammo the player receives from killing demons with the Accelerator Heat Blast
- Fixed a bug where parrying some of the Whiplash’s attacks was not providing the intended rewards
It’s no surprise to see the Super Shotgun get a nerf. The buffs for the Plasma class weapons was sorely needed as well. We reviewed the game back at embargo, stating:
DOOM: The Dark Ages refines one of gaming’s longest-running series into a powerful dance of death. We head back in time after 2016’s excellent revival and Eternal’s soaring masterpiece. We join the Slayer at his peak, being the most feared being in all existence. Humanity and Hell alike cower in his presence. id Software has redefined its premier franchise once again, and you will have one hell of a time.

Makyr Save Us

DOOM: The Dark Ages takes the series back an undetermined amount of time. It is the earliest I can remember the series taking place, potentially thousands of years in the past. The Slayer has been tethered by the Makyrs. Who are they? The lore of the current DOOM games is surprisingly long and complicated. Suffice it to say, in DOOM 2016 and Eternal, you saw glimpses and ideas of what was going on. In the fantastic DLC for Eternal, you ripped and tore your way through these formerly Angelic figures.
DOOM: The Dark Ages is a prequel, but it’s only just starting to tell its own new story. There is a new big, bad demon Prince, who looks a bit weak but has an ominous and terrifying voice. As the Slayer, you’ll work alongside the Sentinels, whom we saw a lot of, at least their legacy, in DOOM Eternal. I think you can come into this title with little knowledge of the lore and be fine. The Slayer is pissed off at demons, scary to anyone around him, rarely talks, and enjoys ripping and tearing (in that order).

Have you played Doom: The Dark Ages yet? If so what do you think of this latest patch?

No not the super shottie! =(
the original series are the oldest games, chronologically. dark ages is set between doom 64 and 2016
No bro it isn’t, it takes place before all the previous Dooms.
You’re both right. The game takes place well before any other game in-universe year-wise. But… it’s only because of time travel! It goes doom 1, 2, and 64. at the end of 64 goes into a portal that brings him back in time in a different universe, which is where TDA happens (then a massive time jump to 2016, eternal). It’s a bit Dr. Who-like.
Originals were definitely first, he is just a marine in those, admittedly damn fine marine, but just a marine. Not a god tier level demon blender.
I heard they are getting ready to drop a ridiculously awesome MP mode hence why they are adjusting the weapons.. Should have MP released just in time for QuakeCon.
I wish… Idk why they didn’t just add a slider for each individual weapon consider they very well could have. The sliders are neat but it’s still a SP game probably always will be. If folks were crying it was too easy even with the sliders tuned up then idk.
Game was fun but 100%’d in it like 50 hours, probably could have done it in 30 or less.
Time for a new Quake game, let the Slayer rest a bit
I honestly don’t see the necessity to nerf weapons in any PvE based game… Pvp sure but a game like this?
