Obsidian’s ‘Avowed’ gets an Update – and a new Roadmap

We’ve had so many great games on Xbox in 2025, it’s hard to believe Avowed was only released a few months ago. Now, the development team at Obsidian have released patch 1.4, bringing with it some new features, but that’s not all – say hello to the Avowed 2025 Roadmap!

Announced as part of the 1.4 Update Blog post, Obsidian have unveiled the Avowed Roadmap, detailing features hitting now (Spring), and beyond for Summer and Fall of 2025. Later this year, players can look forward to Cooking and Crafting improvements, New NPC abilities and behaviours, new abilities, weapons and armour and custom map markers.

As we approach Winter, the team also plan to bring a New Game plus and photo mode, new weapon types, character presets and more. It all sounds rather good to us, and should make a great game even better. Right now though, we have update 1.4 to take a look at.

First up is an ‘Arachnophobia Mode’, which is one of the most requested features from the community. Per Obsidian, “This optional feature replaces spider enemies with round, floating orbs that still pack a punch… but might be a bit less creepy. You can toggle this setting in the Accessibility menu. Just remember: friendlier looks, same deadly bite.

This update also brings with it a whole heap of quality of life improvements, all inspired by direct community feedback and sentiment. Here’s the full list, straight from Obsidian’s Blog Post.

  • Map Exploration Enhancements
    • Once most of a map’s accessible areas are explored, the fog of war will now fully clear.
    • Entering a city on an overland map (e.g. Northern Paradis in Dawnshore) will now reveal that portion of the map.
    • Increased radius for fog clearing as you explore.
  • Critter Loot Drops
    • Critters can now be defeated—and may drop loot!
  • New Party Camp Feature
    • Players can now wait at the Party Camp to advance time.
  • Improved Soul Pod Functionality
    • Soul Pods now dispel illusions (except for Ryngrim’s entrance, which still requires Yatzli’s help).
  • New Settings Options
    • Chests now optionally appear on the minimap.
    • Power attacks with the Bow and Arquebus can now be canceled with a new setting.

We thoroughly enjoyed Avowed on release, with our Reviews Editor Jesse saying, “Avowed is an excellent game. One major issue that keeps it from being an all-timer for me, with the gear progression system being as restrictive as it is at launch. They can patch that, and I hope they do as the rest of the game is excellent. Obsidian’s top-tier writing has finally been matched with gorgeous visuals and satisfying gameplay.

Avowed is available right now in Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Xbox PC Store and Battle.net.
