MTN reports that Blizzard has chosen Nexon after negotiations with various development houses. The negotiations will center around using the Starcraft IP and developing an Overwatch mobile title. According to MTN, the bidding was fierce as the region has been huge for Starcraft as an IP over its lifespan.

They state that the type of game was left open-ended for bidding. Starcraft has been primarily an RTS title, with one attempt at a third-person shooter reaching late development before being canceled. MTN reports on the Starcraft bidding that:

The bidders reportedly made various proposals, including the development of new spin-off games utilizing the ‘StarCraft’ IP, UGC and platform development, including mods using the ‘StarCraft’ IP. It was not specified what type of bid Nexon submitted.

In the case of NCC, CEO Park Byung-moo personally spearheaded the bidding process and reportedly expressed his motivation. Netmarble’s bid was preceded by a contest among its subsidiary developers to develop a new StarCraft IP.

Starcraft I & II Remastered hit Xbox Game Pass late last year, as PC only additions. Xbox now owns Blizzard as part of an acquisition that took many months before it was approved. Overwatch has seen a resurgence in popularity with the launch of its new Stadium mode helping it gain back some of the footing it lost to Marvel Rivals recent release.
