Death Stranding, the first in a new genre and IP from legendary game designer Hideo Kojima and his studio, Kojima Productions, celebrates a new milestone this week with over 20 million players world wide. It’s just a shame about the sequel.

To everyone who built bridges, paved roads, and delivered cargo—here’s a massive “Like!” 👍
Each and every one of your connections helped make this incredible milestone possible. 🤝

Writing on social media platform X (Formerly Twitter) the team wrote the following, “DEATH STRANDING has surpassed 20 million players worldwide! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who has played.“
It’s a shame then that the sequel, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, is currently only coming to PlayStation 5, leaving PC and Xbox fans out in the cold for an undetermined period of time. A new indulgent trailer for the Death Stranding follow up was shown at SXSW, which you can see below.
A release date of June 26th, 2025, was given for PlayStation 5 with no indication if the title would be coming to Xbox or even PC at any point. If you pay extra you can get two days of early-access and start playing on a PlayStation 5 this June 24th.
The irony of the game celebrating so many players was not lost on many, with analyst and king of puns Daniel Ahmad, known as ZhugeEX pointing out that the game sold less than 5M before it’s multiplatform releases.
Worth noting that the game had sold less than 5m copies prior to the PC, PS+, PS5, Series X|S, Mac releases.

Making the game more accessible has led to 20m+ players experiencing the IP prior to the launch of its sequel that will require players to own a PS5 to play at launch. https://t.co/92yRzaNoVy

He’s not wrong. Death Stranding: Directors Cut arrived five years to the day on Xbox, and was even a Play Anywhere title, meaning gamers could buy once and play on both PC and Xbox, with cross-save working between them. Let’s hope it’s not another five year wait, hey?
