Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4?

It’s 2025, five years into the current generation, with both Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 featured a ton of cross-gen titles, working just fine on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles as well, despite them being 12 years old hardware at this point. With one of gaming’s biggest IPs coming back, we’re talking about Assassin’s Creed, the question arises. Is Assassin’s Creed available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4?

This new installment in Ubisoft’s third person open world franchise, putting players inside fascinating times and places in history with a hint of sci-fi in them, is set to be quite the transformative one. A vastly improved graphics engine, noticeably better animations, a world full of moving grass, foliage, drawing distance like never seen before in the series, raytracing – and that’s before the many gameplay additions and improvements. Also, it’s set in feudal Japan – how cool is that?!

The previous episode, Mirage, was a much smaller scale game, serving as a side story for 2020’s massive Valhalla and its memorable ending. As such, it was no surprise that it launched on the very same platforms that Valhalla did – that is, both on current-gen and last-gen hardware, alongside the usual barrage of PC launchers, cloud and more. That obviously begs the question: is Assassin’s Creed Shadows available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4?

Perhaps it was possible to somehow “disable” all the cool technical additions and features like raytracing for last-gen consoles, but ultimately, Ubisoft elected against it. The new Assassin’s Creed Shadows will launch on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, Mac and Amazon Luna, with a day one inclusion in Ubisoft+ as well. As such, a last-gen port for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, let alone a Nintendo Switch version, isn’t currently in the cards. Who knows what the future will bring though – after all, we’ve seen various high profile games like Star Wars: Jedi Survivor and Hogwarts Legacy receive last-gen ports, many months after their original current-gen versions released.

Are you looking forward to this Japanese escapade in the Assassin’s Creed franchise? Perhaps you already had the chance to play it? Would this game help you make the jump from PS4 or Xbox One to the newer consoles – or perhaps even towards PC gaming?
