Over a month ago now, users could claim Alan Wake Remastered for free through an Alan Wake 2 trial on Xbox. News spread fast, resulting in Xbox to eventually take charge of the situation. It does not appear to have effected those who used the redemption while owning the full release of Alan Wake 2.
Today, users were greeted with this message From Xbox themselves. Seems like the whole thing was an error on their part. @Wario64 was the first to report on the situation.

Alan Wake Remastered is a fantastic upgrade to one of 2010s best games. Whilst it can be a stunning adventure, it certainty is a frightening and spooky one too.
‘In this award-winning cinematic action-thriller, troubled author Alan Wake embarks on a desperate search for his missing wife, Alice. Following her mysterious disappearance from the Pacific Northwest town of Bright Falls, he discovers pages of a horror story he has supposedly written, but he has no memory of.’
I found the game to be a love letter to true horror mystery games, and the remaster helped me re-live that great gaming memory I once had.

Although the game is no longer free, Alan Wake Remastered is often on sale and often for a great price. So if you missed out on playing the game during this period you can still pick up this gem. As a fan of the franchise, I really reccommend starting out with the remaster.
No further comments have been made from Xbox themselves at this current time, and Alan Wake Remastered is no longer free.
