What is Xbox Play Anywhere

If you’ve seen video game news lately, you’ve seen Xbox Play Anywhere talked about. What is this system, and how can it benefit you? Read on and find out!

Xbox Play Anywhere is the future of the platform

Play Anywhere is the branding for cross-buy, cross-play, and cross-save. This means that buying one version of a game gives you access to it across your Xbox console and PC. This can also include Xbox Game Streaming, where applicable.

Cross-buy and cross-save are not new. This all-in-one branding is the way the platform attempts to distinguish its version. A proper Xbox Play Anywhere title will give you access to a game on Xbox consoles like the Xbox One and/or Xbox Series X|S, the Microsoft Store on PC, and potentially Xbox Cloud Streaming. The latter generally applies to games that are also part of Xbox’s Game Pass service.

Above is an example of the Play Anywhere store listing. In general it will show you “Playable on: Xbox, PC, Cloud” for Game Pass titles that take advantage of the system. Some non-game pass titles can be played, over 60 of them now, though most are not Play Anywhere. It gets confusing! As long as the Play with lists Xbox Series X|S (or Xbox One) and PC you are playing a Play Anywhere title.
