Tom Warren talks an Xbox Handheld & New Console Plans (Steam?)

The rumors of Xbox’s next gen hardware plans are beginning to ramp up as we are somehow only a few years away from what seems like a likely “next gen” launch in 2027. Reports last week from Windows Central’s Jez Corden gave us an insight into what Xbox is planning, while new info from Tom Warren of The Verge this week provides even more information about Xbox’s hardware plans including an Xbox handheld, but it may not be what you think.

Warren clarifies a few things about Xbox’s thinking behind new hardware, stating “Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell me the company’s Xbox platform plans for this year and beyond are centered on one big goal: the unification of Windows and Xbox.” He goes on to say that Xbox is planning a new handheld tentatively slated for later this year that will be made in partnership with Asus called Project Kennan and should show the first glimpses of Xbox’s work to unify Windows and Xbox.

Warren also discusses Microsoft’s aim to ensure there is a common Xbox UI across multiple devices that further marries Xbox and Windows together. Much more can be read at the link, including Xbox’s work on backwards compatibility and what Warren thinks of potential new hardware in 2027.
