The Art of Slaying

In this first Doom: The Dark Ages video – The Art of Slaying series, Hugo Martin shows off the original concept work that inspired the look and feel of the game:

We spend a lot of time on this stuff, tons of iteration. As I said, when you’re making assets for a Doom game, you’ve got big shoes to fill because those designs from the original Doom Game, the Pinky, the Cade, and those are some of the most iconic designs in all of pop culture. We spend a lot of time on this stuff, tons of iteration.

After showing a few concept pieces Hugo continues:

Entertainment design is kind of a mix between industrial design cars, automotive products, and illustration. So you want to iterate a lot, do little thumbnails, work out your design, work out everything. And then at some point, you’re working your way up to the beauty shot where it all comes together and you’re creating that impression that that’s what the player will see from across the arena.

It is an interesting look into the creative process and well worth three minutes of your time. You can find the full video HERE.
