Death Stranding 2’s release date has been given at SXSW, for PlayStation 5 consoles. What does that mean for Xbox?
Coming this June to PS5, but when for Xbox (if ever)?
At the Southy By Soutwest Film, Music, and Interactive Media Festival, a new trailer has been shown for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. A release date of June 26th, 2025, was given for PlayStation 5 with no indication if the title would be coming to Xbox at any point. If you pay extra you can get two days of early-access and start playing on a PlayStation five this June 24th.
Death Stranding’s first title took five years to the day of its PS4 launch before it hit Xbox consoles after Kojima Productions secured the IP rights back for it.

Death Stranding’s IP
The game’s IP rights reverted to Kojima Productions, and the first title was surprise dropped on Xbox last year:
Surprise! We didn’t even have an inkling this one was coming. Announced via the 505 Games X Account today, Death Stranding: Directors Cut is out now on Xbox Series X|S – and even, better – it’s on sale and it’s ‘Play Anywhere’ – meaning you get both a PC and a console copy.
It’s interesting that as the game turns 5 years old it’s now available on Xbox Consoles. We can surmise that console gaming overlords Sony did a little deal to secure this one for exactly 5 years to the day. A sequel, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is currently in development again exclusive to PlayStation 5.
Will it be another five-year wait before On the Beach arrives on Xbox’s platform? There was no legal text about any length of an exclusivity arrangement at the end of today’s trailer.

Do you think Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will ever come to Xbox? Let us know in the comments below if so and when you think it might.

Fyi – DS was available for a time, on Xbox game pass on PC, more than a year before it officially released on Xbox consoles. It was the base version, but it was available, so the exclusivity being exactly 5 years is incorrect. It was more like 3.5 years after it released on PlayStation it became available on PC with Xbox’s gamepass.
