Sony in talks to purchase Kadokawa, parent company of FromSoftware

If successful, PlayStation would own the Dark Souls, Elden Ring and Sekiro franchises.

Sony, owners of PlayStation are apparently in talks to purchase Kadokawa, parent company of renowned developers FromSoftware according to a new report from Reuters.

Per Reuters, Sony is “is in talks to acquire Kadokawa, the Japanese media powerhouse behind the “Elden Ring” game, two sources familiar with the matter said.” When asked to comment on the report, both Sony and Kadokawa declined to do so.

Sony has long been a close collaborator with FromSoftware and already has a stake in the company, in addition to IP ownership of both Bloodborne and Demon Souls. Kadokawa also owns both Acquire and Spike Chunsoft, and would also fuel Sony’s growing anime empire.

Elden Ring was a massive multiplatform success for the renowned developers, and it’s expansive DLC , “Shadow of the Erdtree” has just been nominated for Game of the Year for Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards.

In our Elden Ring Review, our Review’s editor Jesse said: “Few games have ever left me feeling so enthralled for the entirety of my playtime. Whether you’re going it solo or with a friend Elden Ring is one guaranteed to be one hell of a time.

If successful, will Sony make all future FromSoftware games exclusive to PlayStation?

We wouldn’t be surprised. The games industry is changing, and perhaps they’ll want to keep FromSoftware releasing games across multiple platforms – or perhaps strike another blow at Microsoft’s Xbox platform.

More to come on this over the coming days.
