Following the resounding success of Sea of Thieves, Rare announced their next game Everwild all the way back at XO 2019. We’ve had one updated trailer since then, and not much since aside from some rumours and reports floating around.
Now, thanks to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, we know that Rare are still working on the game, and it is, in some form, playable.

Phil Spencer shared the above post on Threads (Meta’s Twitter/X Competitor), writing “Great day at Rare, hanging out with the developers at their desks and playing Everwild.“
The last we saw of Everwild was a drop dead gorgeous trailer shown during the Xbox and Bethesda Game Showcase back in 2021. That same year, sources had confirmed to the folks over at VGC that Everwild had been ‘completed rebooted‘ after the departure of the titles creative director, Simon Woodroffe.
Simon was replaced with long time Rare developer Gregg Mayles, and the lead designer for Alien Isolation, Gary Napper, joined the team back in 2021 to work on the game. “Really looking forward to making some amazing things with this incredible team and studio.” he said, in a post shared on X (Formerly Twitter) back in 2021.
Quite what Everwild will actually be when it comes to it’s core gameplay loop is not yet fully understood, with the team at Rare keeping things under wraps until they’re ready to show and tell.

Matt Booty, back when he was the head of Xbox Game Studios iterated the same during an interview with KindaFunny, saying: “They are just trying to make sure that they’ve got something special. We’ve shown kind of a glimpse of a world; you’ve seen the art style that the team has got, but we want to get it right.” He continued, “We will share more on Everwild when the team has got some cool stuff to show. We know that there is excitement and anticipation, and we don’t want to just keep things hidden for too long.”
We heard a little more about Everwild from Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who shared on the XB2 (Xbox Two) Podcast that “I heard that development on Everwild is going well. They’ve nailed the gameplay loop now, and we should be seeing that in the future.“
