Announced on the official Age of Empires website, Arena of the Gods is a new, free game mode coming to the recently released Age of Mythology: Retold, itself a brilliant remaster of an absolute classic.

In Arena of the Gods, you’ll be able to take on 35 ‘exhilarating skirmish missions across mythical landscapes where divine challenges await‘ according to the team. You’ll be able to take on this challenges solo or team up with a friend.
The various missions will take you across all sorts of landscapes, putting you up against mythical monsters with the possibility to earn rewards and blessings from the gods themselves. Per the blog post:
Available with Arena of the Gods:
- 35 Epic Skirmishes: Battle through diverse mythological landscapes with selectable difficulty.
- Solo or Co-Op: Play as a hero alone or team up with another friend for cooperative fun.**
- Earn Blessings: Gain powerful abilities like Poseidon’s Rushing Tides and Thor’s Crashing Thunder.
- Dynamic World Twists: Enjoy ever-changing conditions that keep battles fresh and exciting.

There seems to be plenty of opportunity for new strategies in this mode, with players able to use their blessings to adjust their approach as they progress. Some of the new Blessings are as follows:
- Freyr’s Chosen Few (Unique): Houses/Manors are more expensive but spawn a Villager upon building.
- Gaia’s Lashing Roots: Heroes and Legends deal area of effect damage.
- Odin’s Outlaw Wisdom: Special Abilities and God Powers recharge faster.
There are also ‘World Twists’ which are what the developer describes as ‘fun challenges that will constantly redefine the battlefield‘.
Plenty of additional detail over on the blog post, so be sure to go give it a read!
We really enjoyed Age of Mythology: Retold, with our reviewer Pieter saying “The developers have once again done a wonderful job of bringing one of the classic and legendary games from history to the present day. Are you interested in a strategy game with a twist? Are you tired of the human/historical conflicts exhibited in Age of Empires and the like? Then take a look at the mythical world of Age of Mythology: Retold.“
