UPDATE: Buried Alive: Breathless Rescue’s age rating has now been updated to be “M for Mature”, away from its originally set “AO for Adults Only” rating. It seems the days of zero published AO-rated game titles for consoles will continue.
ORIGINAL: Publisher Midnight Works this week dropped their indie horror adventure title ‘Buried Alive: Breathless Rescue onto Xbox consoles (with a PC version available via cross-buy). Retailing at $12.99, players will find themselves quite literally buried alive and will have to make their escape out of a coffin and a house that houses nothing but trouble and ill intentions.
Notably, this release marks the first Xbox game that carries the ESRB’s “Adults Only 18+” rating on the Xbox Store (and on the platform and modern consoles as a whole). Considered a death sentence for a game back in the day (such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’ cut “Hot Coffee” mode incident), developers and publishers skirted the line as much as they could to avoid issues with console manufacturers and game retailers.
Despite not having an official ESRB rating page as of this writing, Breathless Rescue has kept its rating since pre-orders for it went live about two weeks ago, leaving this author unsure of whether or not the rating is intentional. If not, this could mark the beginning of the kind of content the company is okay with hosting on its Xbox platform.
