With the gaming industry typically churning out all sorts of bad news of late – studio closures, mass layoffs and more – it’s genuinely nice to write about something positive. And that’s the case here, with the State of Decay developers Undead Labs going above and beyond for a fan of the game.
Reddit user ‘EmbarrassedBudget859‘ sadly lost his father several years ago, and requested the developers add him as a survivor to the games post-apocalyptic open world in the State of Decay Reddit.
The reddit user shared an admittedly ‘potato-cam’ quality photo of the addition within State of Decay 2 when he stumbled upon it in-game, writing “So my dad died a few years ago and I’m one of the many who are obsessed with this game.
So… I sent the devs a message asking to put him in the game. And they did what they could, which means just adding his name to random survivors. 3 years later and I found HIM. not just his name. But his traits, everything about him. This will always be my forever community. Sorry the photo is trash but I’m still in shock. These devs need more recognition.“

It looks like the Undead Labs developer responsible is Geoffrey Card, a game designer at Undead Labs, currently working on State of Decay. It’s a small gesture, but one that clearly hit home for many responding to the original Reddit post. Awesome work Geoff!
Undead Labs of course, are hard at work on their next game, State of Decay 3, which has certainly had a big visual upgrade.
