Per Bloomberg, Grand Theft Auto and 2K publisher Take-Two Interactive is planning to shutter two of their studios over the coming months.
As part of information reviewed by the outlet, these layoffs are part of a larger-scale layoff across its divisions. ‘Rollerdrome’ developer Roll7 had its staff notified of incoming layoffs and will issue severance packages accordingly. ‘Kerbal Space Program 2’ developer Intercept Games had Take-Two issue a WARN notice to the Washington State Employment Security Department on Monday, the publisher planning on closing a Seattle-based office with roughly the number of people currently employed at the development studio.
Comments from Take-Two’s Vice President for Communications Alan Lewis said in a statement that the company “is not providing additional details” at this time and that “updates to Kerbal Space Program 2” will continue. At the moment, however, players largely remain unconvinced of that.
2024 has been a nasty year for game layoffs and studio closures. From Electronics Arts to SEGA, very few studios have managed to stave off impending job losses. But the game industry still persists, whether its indie titles and even new AAA-focused studios—hopefully the storm passes soon.
Japanese Publisher Sega are cutting 240 jobs in Europe, in addition to selling off Canadian developer Relic Entertainment in order to cut costs across the business, it was announced today. The job cuts are mainly hitting Sega studio Alien Isolation developer Creative Assembly, who had their virtually complete first person shooter project “Hyenas” cancelled at the 11th hour last year. This is the second round for the developers, who already were hit with redundancies when the decision to cancel Hyenas was made.
