Games have always been getting movie and TV screen adaptations, but more recently said adaptations have been well-received and are anticipated among the telly-viewing audience. You don’t have to look further than how well shows like ‘The Last of Us’, TRIGGER’s ‘Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunner’, and the more recent Paramount Pictures’ ‘Halo’ are doing to get the idea: video games made to TV and film are in hot demand right now. As for what folks are vying to see on the screen, GAME at Frasers Group surveyed a group of 650 GAME customers on their anticipated upcoming video games to TV and film adaptations, with the upcoming ‘Fallout’ TV show sitting up top the likes of ‘BioShock’ and ‘God of War’.

Per Nick Arran, managing director of GAME, players are looking forward to the upcoming Fallout TV show (set for the 11th of April), right next to the likes of BioShock which is often played on the Xbox platform.
“The second most anticipated release, Netflix’s adaptation of BioShock, a game often played on Xbox, will see the underwater city of Rapture brought to life. The cast of the exciting adaptation is yet to be revealed, only furthering excitement around upcoming announcements on the development of the film.”
Nick Arran, Managing Director of GAME
Only 9% of gamers are looking forward to the more recently announced ‘The Sims’ adaptation, which is set to be produced by LuckyChap, the production company behind Warner Bros.’ ‘Barbie’ film adaptation.
The surveyed have also expressed interest in an adaptation of Rockstar Games’ ‘Red Dead Redemption’ next to the likes of BioWare’s ‘Mass Effect’ and Guerilla Games’ ‘Horizon’ series of games. And even at a small percentage, folks seemingly want to see more of ‘Crash Bandicoot’.

“Gamers are keen to see the western adventures in Red Dead Redemption adapted for viewing. This would see former outlaw John Marston journey across the American West and Mexico – extremely appealing for the big screen! The gaming community would also like to see an adaptation of the Mass Effect series. Interestingly, an adaptation that would see protagonist Commander Sheperd brought to life had been in the works, but has since been cancelled.”

With Amazon’s upcoming Fallout TV show on the horizon and considering the success of these films in the streaming era of things, production companies are actively looking to bring more games to the big screen (and quite a few Xbox properties!). Some will be great, potentially middling, or outright stinkers—but it’s not like their existence impacts the source material, so this author says more adaptations are always a good thing.
