Bethesda Softworks Celebrates 35 Years of Making Games

Bethesda Softworks is celebrating 35 years of game development today as they were founded on June 28th, 1986 by Christopher Weaver. Bethesda are well known for publishing games like Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Doom, Dishonored, and others, but their beginnings were a bit more humble.

Bethesda originally worked on sports games like Gridiron!, Wayne Gretsky Hockey, NCAA Basketball: Road To The Final Four. They eventually ventured off to make licensed games like The Terminator, Home Alone, and Where’s Waldo.

In 1994, Bethesda published The Elder Scrolls: Arena, which would start the decades long journey of one of the greatest Role Playing series of all time. Bethesda would also begin developing another RPG series in Fallout after acquiring the rights from Interplay Entertainment in 2007.

Bethesda would continue to grow and became one of the most recognized publishers in the industry, culminating in Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda’s parent company Zenimax Media in September of 2020.

Bethesda has been around for a while and are just now beginning their journey as part of Xbox. Hopefully the next 35 years are even greater than the last 35 have been.
