Minecraft to receive official raytracing support

Whilst the Super Duper Graphics Pack may have been cancelled, Mojang have clearly been working on other things and have announced official raytracing support for Minecraft on compatible devices.

First of all, they have an entirely new engine called Render Dragon – this has already been demoed to a degree during the recent Apple Worldwide Developer conference. The engine itself features edge highlighting and new, modern lighting techniques, which according to Mojang, is just the beginning of the upgrades that are on the way.

The second part of this is raytracing. Mojang has partnered with NVIDIA and initially, it’ll be available on devices that are capable of supporting DirectX R (Think the RTX series of GPUs) with plans to expand support to future platforms.

In short, as we’ve seen from recent raytracing mods for Minecraft, it looks sublime.
