In his latest podcast published earlier today, Xbox’s Larry Hryb – popularly known as Major Nelson – has interviewed Double Fine’s founder and industry legend Tim Schafer, as well as Game Informer’s Ben Reeves, responsible for writing the full scoop on Psychonauts 2 on this month’s issue.
During this 15-minutes long interview Tim Schafer gave us more details about the long-awaited game that is releasing on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10 PCs later this year. Check out the highlights below:
We really tried to make every level with its own artstyle and a gameplay twist, something different than all the other levels, and it’s part of the reason it takes so long to make these games. (…) You never know what’s going to happen. It’s set inside the human mind, so we can do anything we want this way. It’s so creatively inspiring to make a game like this and fun to play.
There’s platforming. Raz is a trained acrobat so he has a lot of skills (…) and a lot of deep platform mechanics. It’s an adventure game, so there are puzzles, dialogue with characters like in some of the old LucasArts adventure games dialogue trees.
New gameplay footage was also shown and Tim Schafer detailed some of the context around that segment:
This is inside Hollis’ mind once Raz has kind of been messing around in there with his new powers. In the game you have some of the old psychic powers from the first game and also a new power called “Mental Connection” where you can connect various thoughts in someon’s mind.
Raz was trying to achieve his goals by making some connections in her mind and accidentally makes her way too interested in gambling, so it gets mixed up with all her memories of medical school to create this environment where it’s a hospital where doctors are rolling the dice to decide if patients will live or die.
