Phil Spencer “Nobody’s asking for VR”

Phil Spencer made his stance on VR pretty clear in an interview with Stevivor.

He says that “I have some issues with VR — it’s isolating and I think of games as a communal, kind of together experience. We’re responding to what our customers are asking for and…nobody’s asking for VR”

This is an interesting comment from Spencer and might come as a bit of a surprise. A few years ago when the Xbox One X was announced, it seemed inevitable that VR would eventually make its way to Xbox.

Now, it seems unlikely that Virtual Reality will make its way to the platform anytime soon. His comments do make some sense though. VR is still a bit niche. It definitely has millions of people who enjoy it, but it’s not something that has necessarily penetrated the mainstream yet.

Even success stories like the PSVR have low attachment rates. It wouldn’t make too much sense right now for Xbox to focus on a device that wouldn’t have a high attach rate to its consoles.

I do think that VR does have a future, so as the technology behind VR improves, I would hope that Xbox would one day look to make a headset compatible with an Xbox console.
