Phil Spencer discusses future acquisitions, says “We’re definitely not done”

Ever since Xbox acquired Bethesda on September 22, 2020, the number one question surrounding the company has been who they would buy next. It’s been 13 months since the industry shaking move was made and the answer Xbox has been giving to that question remains the same; they’re not done.

In an interview with Sarah Needleman of The Wall Street Journal on WSJ Tech Live, Phil Spencer discussed future acquisitions. The quote was transcribed to Twitter by Tom Warren of The Verge.

Spencer says about future acquisitions, “We’re definitely not done. There’s no quota, no timeline where I have to go acquire studios by a certain time, but if we find a studio where we have a good fit… absolutely”.

This quote should not come as a surprise and is consistent with what the public message from Xbox has been. They’re always looking for teams who fit within the culture that Xbox Game Studios is trying to build.

Contrary to some claims, the Redmond based company does not appear to be throwing money at just any studio or publisher who is willing to take it. They’re looking for specific partners that will help build the next era of great exclusive games.

Xbox will acquire more talent eventually. The only question that remains is when and who. When we finally have that answer, it will undoubtedly be a talented team who joins an already excellent group of studios under the Xbox umbrella.
