Phil Spencer on Bethesda games exclusivity: ”Don’t have to ship games on other platforms in order to make the deal work for us.”

In a Kotaku interview, which everyone interested in Xbox should read, Phil Spencer commented on a couple of things regarding Xbox, including exclusivity of future Bethesda games. He also comments on Halo, file sizes, future SSD’s and the Xbox Series X|S launch.

In regards to Bethesda exclusivty, Spencer said the following:

“Is it possible to recoup a $7.5 billion investment if you don’t sell Elder Scrolls VI on the PlayStation?”

“Yes,”

“I don’t want to be flip about that, this deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that. Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was: ‘How do we keep other players from playing these games?’ We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games. But I’ll also say in the model—I’m just answering directly the question that you had—when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means.”

Microsoft has many platforms now, launching games on Xbox, PC and even mobile via their cloud streaming. Besides that they are also publishing their games on Steam. Proof will be in the pudding, but it seems future Bethesda games will not be coming to PlayStation or competing cloud services such as Stadia and Luna.

Besides this, Spencer also talks about streaming Xbox Series X games on your Xbox One:

“When we think about Xbox One, absolutely, we think it could be a good way for us to bridge generations and be able to let people play those games, I don’t think it’s years off. It’s just work to get done. We know how to do it.”

According to the interview, this is below iOS and PC on the list of priorities right now.
