Pentiment Director says “I never would have proposed making Pentiment without Game Pass”

Pentiment is the latest project from Xbox owned studio Obsidian and is receiving rave reviews for its dedication to story and accuracy in its 16th century Bavarian setting. The game, which was made by about 13 people, is a narrative adventure game in which you follow Andreas Maler as he tries to solve a murder mystery in his small fictional town of Tassing.

The director of Pentiment Josh Sawyer went on the Waypoint Radio podcast and discussed the game and how it was possible that this niche within a niche even exists. “I never would have proposed making Pentiment without Game Pass”, Sawyer says.

He goes on to say that in a traditional developer-publisher model the goal is to get the highest return on investment with large teams. He says that really isn’t in the point “in this environment”.

Game Pass has been the focus of many Monday morning quarterback type arguments as players aim to figure out what exactly the service means for the gaming industry. Josh Sawyer’s quote is just the latest of example of Game Pass helping different types of games exist and ensuring the number one goal isn’t profit for each individual game. Pentiment is a testament to a singular vision and we are glad that it is possible due to Obsidian’s partnership with Xbox.
