‘Carbon Aware’ Downloads, Remote Control Via Google Home App, and Minor Dashboard Improvements Come in Today’s Xbox System Update

"Every two Xbox consoles set to 'shutdown' mode saves the carbon equivalent of one tree's work."

What You Need to Know

  • Xbox is now the first console to offer carbon aware game downloads and updates. You can choose the energy settings that work best for you.
  • Hide game art when selecting tiles on your Xbox Home background.
  • Use the Google Home app as a touch remote control for your Xbox console.

Xbox Experiences via Xbox Wire announced the rollout of a new system update for Xbox consoles. One of the bigger changes includes a new update system similar to that of Windows 11, where the console will schedule game downloads and updates based on regional carbon data for improved carbon emissions. Ergo, ‘carbon aware’, which should help cut down on unnecessary carbon emissions. Other changes include selecting a solid colour to replace game art for the dashboard background, being able to control your console via the Google Home app, and an experimental ‘jump back into parties’ option.

Users can choose to wait for the update to queue up on their console, or can go to settings and download it immediately.
