ID@Xbox Summer Game Fest Demo Event – Day 2 Impressions

ID@Xbox Summer Game Fest Demo Event Day 2

In our continuing coverage of the Xbox Game Fest Demo Event we’ll be going over a few more of the demos available on Xbox One between July 21st-27th.

KungFu Kickball

A new title from Blowfish and WhaleFood Games, the splash screen’s art style immediately reminded me of Steven Universe. As the announcer bellowed “Kung Fu Kickball” a raucous 70’s style movie score kicked in and I immediately cracked a smile. The game itself felt like a more deliberate #IDARB. You attempt to kick a ball (and your opponent) into a bell situated in various locations, like a Dragon’s mouth. There is a jump and teleport dash as well, overall it was fairly simple but quite fun.

9 Monkeys of Shaolin

This one is an oddity, as it released in full last year. It is a side-scrolling brawler in the vein of the arcade classics of the past. There is a heavy emphasis on combo’ing attacks and dodging deliberate attacks. Available for single or 2 player co-op play I ended up going through this demo multiple times because the combat system felt so good. Attacks land with a sickening thud and enemies ragdoll hilariously as they are defeated. This has been the best playing game out of everything I have tried so far.

Projection: First Light

Published by Blowfish and  developed by Australian studio ShadowPlay Studios, Projection: First Light is a 2d platformer with a focus on controlling a light source to cast shadows you can jump on and manipulate as you travel through various countries around the globe. Released last year the game has a beautiful art style with a pleasing soundtrack. The gameplay is simple as you use the right analog stick to control your light source and build platforms for yourself out of the shadows produced.
