Fallout New Vegas is the best Fallout game, and in my opinion the best RPG this decade. Don’t miss it.
Fallout: New Vegas has just been added to GamePass, and just in time to reminisce before The Outer Worlds releases on October 25th.
Fallout: New Vegas, developed by Obsidian Entertainment, was released on October 19th, 2010. This game was the follow up to the smash hit Fallout 3, and had a lot of expectations to meet the highs of that game.
New Vegas released to decent praise, but was marred for its bugs, lack of polish, and overall jank thanks to the gamebryo engine.
It was seen as a nice successor to Fallout 3, but wasn’t necessarily seen as superior, at least at first.
Now, almost 9 years later, it’s not only the best Fallout game ever made, it is often cited as one of the best RPGs ever made.
The setup for New Vegas is simple; you are a courier who has to deliver something to the New Vegas strip. You are attacked, robbed of the item you are delivering, and left for dead. The main thrust of the game is heading back to the strip to get what was stolen from you.
The thing that makes New Vegas such a great game is that you choose how you go about the story.
You can take as much time as you time as you want before even getting to the Vegas strip, or head straight there as soon as you start the game.
Do you want to be a murderous fiend who slaughters his way to the end? You can do that. Do you want to be a smooth talking character who talks his way in and out of situations? You can do that. There’s so many ways to go about progressing through the game, and it’s all backed by incredible quests and writing.
Fallout 3 and 4 are the two other modern day Fallout games, and while they each have quality things about them, none of them touch the quest design or writing that is layered throughout New Vegas.
Fallout New Vegas is one of the best written games I’ve ever played, and that writing is found all through random conversations with NPCs, all the way to deeply dynamic branching quests.
It’s a joy just to talk to characters, and see what they have to say, and use your various skills to try and get something out of the conversation.
On top of the excellent writing and quest design is an incredibly interesting post apocalyptic world to explore. There’s always something interesting to find no matter where you look.
And while there is certainly a lot of desert to see and miles of nothing, it never got boring just wandering around and trying to find something interesting.
I could go on and on about the things I love, including the incredible music, a few characters I loved, some set pieces and quests I really enjoyed, but that’s better suited for a full on review.
Needless to say, Fallout New Vegas is one of the best RPGs I have ever played, and finding it on GamePass is exciting. It’s a great game, and if you haven’t played it yet, do yourself a favor and don’t miss it.
